How to Write a Professional Resume Summary

What is a Resume Summary?

A resume summary is a brief paragraph at the top of your resume that highlights your most relevant experience, skills, and achievements. It serves as your "elevator pitch" to the hiring manager.

Summary vs. Objective Statement

An objective statement tells the employer what you want (e.g., "Seeking a challenging marketing role"). These are outdated and should not be used. A summary tells the employer what you can do for them.

The 3-Part Formula for a Great Summary

  1. Your Title & Experience: (e.g., "Results-driven Marketing Manager with 8+ years of experience...")
  2. Your Core Expertise: (e.g., "...specializing in digital marketing, B2B lead generation, and team leadership...")
  3. Your Top Achievement: (e.g., "...with a proven track record of increasing pipeline revenue by 40% year-over-year.")

If you're struggling to condense your experience, you can use our Free Resume Summary Generator.
