Resume vs CV: What's the Difference?
Resume vs. CV (United States & Canada)
In North America, a resume and a CV are two distinct documents used for different purposes.
The Resume
A resume is a brief, concise summary of your skills, experience, and education tailored to a specific job. It is typically 1-2 pages long and focuses on your professional achievements.
The Curriculum Vitae (CV)
A CV (Latin for "course of life") is a comprehensive document detailing your entire academic and professional history. It can be several pages long and includes publications, grants, fellowships, and research experience. CVs are primarily used when applying for academic, scientific, or medical positions.
Resume vs. CV (International)
In many other parts of the world, including the UK, Europe, and Australia, the terms "resume" and "CV" are often used interchangeably to refer to the same standard 1-2 page professional document.
Which One Should You Use?
If you are applying for a standard corporate job in the US, use a resume. If you are applying for a professorship, use a CV. When in doubt, read the job description carefully.
